Hats Off to Michelle Obama’s Style

The first lady is the latest icon of the fashion world — in other words — she is so hot right now! Not only is her husband the first black president, but she is the first first lady to ignore — what the New York Times dubbed — “wife wear” or clothes traditionally worn by the presidents’ wives. She’s traded in power suits for cardigans. And in place of designer clothes, she’s wearing J.Crew. She’s showing that powerful women can still be taken seriously without the shoulder-padded, male-inspired suit. But they don’t have to just stand by their husband looking pretty in pink frills and hats either.

Often compared to Jackie Kennedy, Michelle Obama shows that she has a sense of style, but one that is her own. She ignores fashion icons, such as Armani, Gucci and Prada; and instead, she has spent a lot of time with Asian-American designer Jason Wu, who designed her white inaugural ball dress. She certainly doesn’t obsess over wearing the nation’s red, white and blue everywhere she goes either. In Europe this last week, she’s mixed it up with a bright yellow dress (again by Jason Wu) and a J.Crew spring green outfit, shown above.

While the first lady has bigger things to deal with than fashion, the fashion world appreciates that she’s representing her country in nothing but style. To get the first lady’s look, check out this outfit:
